VW Reveals New Atlas Cross Sport

Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, bringing a bold new design, upgraded technology, enhanced comfort, and the most powerful engine ever offered in the model. The second-generation Atlas Cross Sport builds on the success of the five-seat midsize SUV with a more premium look and feel while retaining the spaciousness and everyday versatility that have helped make the Volkswagen Atlas family an important part of the brand’s U.S. lineup.

A Sportier Take on the Volkswagen Atlas

The 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport takes a more emotional, design-focused approach to the midsize SUV segment. Compared with the three-row 2027 Volkswagen Atlas, the Cross Sport is 5.4 inches shorter and 2.1 inches lower, with dramatically angled rear pillars that create a coupe-like profile. The result is a sportier stance that emphasizes the vehicle’s wider, more planted proportions.

Volkswagen has redesigned virtually every exterior surface for 2027. At the front, double-stacked LED headlights, a masked upper grille, a powerful hood, and an available illuminated Volkswagen badge create a distinctive appearance. Double lightlines add a sophisticated lighting signature, while entry-level models use silver exterior accents instead of the piano-black elements found on the seven-seat Atlas.

Advanced Safety and IQ.DRIVE Technology

The new Atlas Cross Sport also receives upgrades designed to provide greater confidence on the road. A new front center airbag brings the total number of airbags to seven, while Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE driver assistance technology receives several refinements.

Travel Assist provides semi-automated hands-on driving capability from 0 to 95 mph and now allows driver-initiated lane changes. Emergency Assist Plus can also guide the vehicle toward the side of the road when the system detects a medical emergency.

Higher trims benefit from the latest Park Assist Plus system and Predictive Adaptive Cruise Control. When the available navigation system is being used with adaptive cruise control, the predictive system can adjust vehicle speed based on route information, including curves, roundabouts, exit ramps, and speed bumps.

The Most Powerful Atlas Cross Sport Engine Yet

Performance gets a substantial upgrade for the 2027 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport. The new model is powered by the latest evo5 version of Volkswagen’s EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI engine. Thanks in part to a variable geometry turbocharger, the engine produces 282 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

That represents a 13-horsepower increase over the previous engine, while Volkswagen anticipates improved fuel economy. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission featuring Tiptronic manual shifting.

Front-wheel drive is standard, while Volkswagen 4Motion all-wheel drive is available throughout the lineup. The Atlas Cross Sport retains a 5,000-pound towing capacity when equipped with a factory-installed trailer hitch. Volkswagen also plans to introduce a hybrid variant during the model’s midcycle refresh.

Like the Atlas, the new Atlas Cross Sport will continue to be assembled at Volkswagen’s factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Approximately 4,000 people work at the facility, where the Atlas family has been produced alongside other Volkswagen vehicles.

The Atlas family has become a major part of Volkswagen’s U.S. business, accounting for roughly one-third of the brand’s American sales. Since the Atlas Cross Sport debuted in 2020, more than 220,000 examples have been sold in the United States.
